A More Beautiful You
|

Your wedding day may be the
single most important and memorable day in your life. As you
plan for the ceremony that will change your life, now may be
the time to plan to make those cosmetic changes you've been
thinking about.
With today's technology every
woman can have clear, radiant skin with few, if any, wrinkles
or imperfections. From facials to laser skin resurfacing,
there is a level of treatment for every desired affect,
whether you are just looking to clear up clogged pores and
breakouts or are more interested in taking years off your face
along with any scars.
No matter what condition your
skin is in, plan on having at least a facial before your
wedding. In the course of a few hours at a salon or spa your
skin seem clearer and more radiant. Not only do facials clear
your pores and soften skin, they also have a relaxing effect.
So as the stress of planning your wedding builds up, schedule
several facials. Many salons and day spas will allow you to
book special rooms and rates for you and your entire wedding
party before the ceremony.
For skin that may need a little
more help, the newest chemical peels are easier, quicker and
safer than ever. Peels use an alpha hydroxyl acid solution.
Alpha hydroxyl acids are naturally occurring acids derived
from certain plants and fruits. Many women use alpha hydroxyl
acid-based facial lotions and creams on a regular basis. Alpha
hydroxyl acids work by decreasing the compounds that hold dead
skin on the surface. By breaking down these compounds, the
dead cells slough off, leaving behind a layer of smoother,
softer skin. Alpha hydroxyl peels are often called "lunchtime
peels" since most can be performed without missing time from
work.

A glycolic acid is applied to the
skin briefly and then washed off. This solution causes the top
layers of skin to peel off, usually over the course of 1 to 2
days, exposing a new layer of undamaged skin which has a
smoother texture and better color. Since these are light
peels, for the best results you should plan on having several.
The usual course of treatment is six treatments at 2 to 3 week
intervals. |

A new technology more and more
women are turning to today is microdermabrasion. These new
peels basically "sandblast" dead, dull skin off your
face. Microdermabrasion uses a particulate to forcefully
abrade the top layer of skin. The dead skin cells, along with
the particulate, are immediately vacuumed through a hand piece
and disposed of. It takes seconds, allowing the physician or
therapist to move in precise patterns. The longer the wand is
held in place, the deeper the treatment. After treatment your
skin will feel tight, slightly wind burned. Improvement is
noticed almost immediately, within a day or two. The
treatments, which last about 30 to 45 minutes, are a great way
to minimize the appearance of aging skin, fine lines,
wrinkles, acne scars, age spots and brown spots. Since microdermabrasion
is not as aggressive as chemical peels, you may need six to 10
treatments, usually about a week to 10 days apart.
Women with deeper wrinkles or
more severe scars may want to consider laser skin resurfacing,
which is similar to microdermabrasion, only treatment extends
to deeper layers of the skin. If you have wrinkles that are
visible to others across a dinner table, this may be a
procedure to consider. It also has shown great improvement in
the treatment of deep acne or chicken pox scars. Because of
the length of treatment and recovery, it is best to begin
treatments about six months before your wedding.

Lasers are also being used
extensively for hair removal. Electrolysis, which has been in
use since the early 1900s, requires between 20 and 30 visits
over 10 to 16 weeks to remove unwanted hair on the average
female upper lip. Laser hair removal for the same area can be
accomplished in typically two to four visits. Like
electrolysis, it leaves the area virtually hairless for 3 to 6
months or more.
When hair grows back, it tends
to be fine and sparse. Since hair grows in 8 to 12 week
cycles, most people need treatments every 3 months. Most
doctors recommend a series of two to four treatments to the
desired area over a period of approximately six to twelve
months.
Once you have made the decision
to have a cosmetic procedure, spend some time selecting your
doctor. Ask your doctor, friends and local hospital for
referrals. Be sure to ask your doctor about his credentials,
including specialization credentials. Ask how long the doctor
has been performing the procedure and how many he has done.
Just as planning well in advance is the key to a creating a
beautiful and memorable wedding, the same is true for creating
a new and beautiful look for yourself.
But with a little planning,
effort and cost, everyone can look as beautiful as they hoped
for their wedding. |
